The History of the Ford Transit Connect

Ford Transit Connect

The Ford Transit Connect is what’s considered a compact panel van. People use it for all sorts of things from transporting large groups of people to hauling cargo. It was originally created by Ford Europe to replace outdated cargo vans based off the Ford Escort and Fiesta. Today, it has become one of the most popular cargo vans on the market and currently available at our Ford dealership near Bradley.

First Generation Transit Connect

The first generation Ford Transit Connect was released for the 2002 model year. It was built on the Ford C170 platform, which also housed the Ford Focus. The vehicle was quite popular, landing Van of the Year from Professional Van and Light Truck Magazine in 2004. In 2008, the vehicle made its American debut at the Chicago Auto Show and was released the following year as a 2010 model year vehicle. It was named North American Truck of the Year in 2010.

To help establish buzz for the vehicle, Ford took the Transit Connect to 13 different urban spaces around the US, showing it to people who might need it. They could take test drives and learn more about the van.

An interesting fact about the Transit Connect is that it is imported to America only as a passenger vehicle, as there is a 25% tax on importing light trucks. Some of these remain passenger vehicles while others converted to cargo vans in Baltimore.

The Second Generation Transit Connect

The second generation of the cargo van made its debut in 2012 in the Netherlands and will be coming soon to the United States as a 2014 model year vehicle. It will come with either a 2.5L four-cylinder engine or a 1.6L turbocharged EcoBoost engine. The vehicle features a new design and new features like adding the option of a rear liftgate instead of double rear doors.
