The Ford Mustang is the third oldest Ford nameplate currently in production. The original version, based on the Ford Falcon compact car, was introduced on April 17 of 1964. It was Ford’s most successful launch since the Model A and created the pony car class, a sport car-like coupe.
The original Mustang was developed in a record setting eighteen months. The prototype was a two-seat roadster that was equipped with a Ford Taunus V4 engine. It was remodeled as a four-seat car offered in hardtop, fastback and convertible body styles. It was built using a number of components already in production for other models.
The second generation Mustang was released in 1974. The Mustang II was released just two months before the 1973 oil crisis and was smaller and more fuel efficient; it was based on the Ford Pinto Subcompact. Buyers had a choice of a coupe and a hatchback body style and a new luxury Ghia model. A new 302 CID V8 engine was added to the powertrain lineup. The Cobra II version was introduced in 1967 and the King Cobra version in 1978.
The fifth generation Mustang was based on the new D2C platform. The base engine was a 4.0L V6 that was paired with a five speed manual transmission. A 4.6L V8 was available on upper trims. The 2010 model added new spring rates, dampers, traction and stability control systems, and new wheels. The engines were revised in 2011 and dual exhaust was added. A new Boss 302 model was introduced for 2012 and was based on the original version.
The current 2013 Ford Mustang is available now at Terry’s Ford. The new model is available in a choice of a coupe and a convertible body styles with five unique trim options. Depending on the trim option, the Mustang can also be equipped with a 3.7L V6 or a 5.0L V8 engine.
