These days, vehicles like the Ford F-150 dominate the American pickup truck market. It’s no easy task making a versatile pickup truck like the Ford F-Series, but Ford has had a lot of experience. The F-Series originally came out after World War II and has continued to excel for over 60 years. Our Peotone car dealership is going to take a look back at Ford’s very successful pickup truck.
Ford came out with the first generation of the F-Series in 1948. It was the first pickup they produced since 1941. Most importantly, it was the first pickup they built which had its own dedicated pickup platform. Before then, Ford pickup trucks made due with standard car platforms.
Drivers could get it with either a 6’6” or 8’ bed, and all-wheel drive was an option. One of the most innovative features for the vehicle at the time was the “See-Clear” windshield washer. It was operated by using a foot plunger; both the driver and passenger controlled the wiper on their side.
The F-Series has come a long way and now is in its twelfth generation. It first debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show and then went into production at the Kansas City Assembly Plant. Currently, it’s available in F150, F250, F350, and F450 models starting at $23,670.
Today, the 2013 pickup trucks carry technology quite a bit more advanced than the foot-controlled windshield wipers of the first model. The most recent Ford F-Series vehicles come with the MyFord touchscreen infotainment system allowing drivers to control navigation, make phone calls, and even make audio selection on their mp3 player. What a long way we’ve come.
