The Ford Explorer Changed the Perception of the SUV

2013 Ford Explorer

Since 1990, the Ford Explorer has continued to not only be one of Ford’s best-selling models, but also one of the top-selling SUVs in general. It was because of the Explorer that the perception of the SUV changed from being a special-interest vehicle to one of the most-driven on the road today. Peotone and Bradley Ford drivers can stop by Terry’s Ford of Peotone and learn more about the history of this Ford SUV, and take one for a test drive.

The Explorer’s Early Years of Existence

Released in March of 1990 as a 1991 model year vehicle, the initial edition of the Explorer was sold as a replacement for the smaller Ford Bronco II. It came equipped with a 4.0L V6 engine that delivered 155 hp. The first generation model came in either a 3-door or 5-door body style and was available in either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive.

Second generation included a new 5-speed automatic transmission for V6 Explorers, a redesigned liftgate, rear bumper, and tail lights, a new Medium Prairie Tan interior color, and upgraded second generation airbags.

The 2002 model year of this Ford SUV, which was the beginning of its third generation, underwent a complete redesign. For the first time, third row seating became available, bringing passenger capacity to seven. It offered either a 4.0L V6 or a 4.6L V8 engine. The trim levels were now the base Sport Value, Sport Choice, XLS, Sport Premium, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited.

The fourth generation Explorer offered new interior design, standard tire pressure monitoring system and electronic stability control, a 4.0L V6 engine, and a new Sport Trac that featured an optional V8 engine.

The fifth and current generation of the Ford Explorer debuted with the 2011 model. This modern-day Ford vehicle features push button and remote engine start, power liftgate, MyFord Touch, Sony audio system with HD radio, and in-dash navigation system.

The Explorer comes available in either front-wheel or full-time four-wheel drive. Owners have engine options of a 2.0L EcoBoost, 3.5L Duratec, or 3.5L EcoBoost.
