2017 Ford Mustang
2017 Subaru WRX
The Mustang has long been a favorite choice among sports car owners near Bradley and Peotone, and their admiration has not been misguided! The 2017 Ford Mustang is offering more than any Mustang before it, and when it’s compared to the 2017 Subaru WRX, it’s not hard to see what makes the Mustang so exceptional. The 2017 Subaru WRX Base is priced at $26,695 MSRP, while the Mustang V6 Fastback can be purchased for just $25,185 MSRP. The Mustang’s lower price makes it a more attractive option for drivers on a budget, and as well soon see, its performance more than lives up to this initial promise.
When you ask the drivers in our area what they love about sports cars, you’ll almost always get a response that’s centered around these vehicles’ speed and power! High horsepower and torque are the defining elements of any sports car, and in these regards, the Mustang enjoys clear superiority over the WRX. The engineers at Subaru have designed the WRX with a Turbocharged 2.0-Liter, 16-Valve, DOHC Direct Injection Engine. This engine block is able to produce up to 268 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, but it doesn’t come close to matching the output produced by the Mustang V6 Fastback’s standard engine. In the latter, we find a massive 3.7-Liter, V6, 24-Valve, DOHC Sequential Electronic Fuel Injected Engine. When you’re roaring down the highway or tearing around the racetrack, the Mustang’s engine places 300 hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque at your disposal!
The Mustang’s baseline V6 Fastback already has an advantage over the Subaru WRX, and the distance that separates their outputs only grows as we explore the upgrade options available to each competitor. Upon upgrading with the WRX’s STI trim, the engine described above is replaced with a turbocharged 2.5-Liter, 16-Valve, DOHC engine. Even with its increased size, the WRX’s turbocharged engine is barely able to outstrip the output of the Mustang. In this build, which is priced at $31,195 MSRP, the WRX gets just 305 hp and 290 lb.-ft. of torque. This is the only alternative engine available to WRX drivers, but with the Mustang, buyers will have three additional engines to choose from! The first of these is a turbocharged 2.3-Liter Ecoboost engine that offers 310 hp, 320 lb.-ft. of torque, and as we’ll see below, also gives the Mustang the advantage in fuel economy. Other Mustang options include a 5.0-Liter V8 engine and a 5.2-Liter V8 with even greater power. The former is standard on the GT and GT Premium trims, and it produces 435 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque! The latter is standard on the Shelby GT350, and this final option manages to provide no less than 526 hp of torque and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. When you’re selecting your next sports car, make sure you stick with Ford: the manufacturer that understands what drivers love about this segment.
Although it isn’t discussed as often, most sports car drivers also want their vehicles to be relatively fuel efficient. After all, spending time on the open road is a lot more fun when you don’t have to spend a great deal of money to do so! At first glance, the WRX appears to have a slight advantage in this regard. It gets 20 mpg/city and 23 mpg combined, while the Mustang V6 Fastback returns 17 mpg/city 21 mpg combined. However, the Mustang wins out on a clear stretch of highway, where it gets 28 mpg to the WRX’s 27 mpg. Additionally, buyers who opt for the Mustang will be able to win out on all three fronts with just one simple upgrade! As we mentioned earlier, the Mustang is available with a powerful and efficient 2.3-Liter Ecoboost engine. The Ecoboost Fastback trim is priced at just $26,195 MSRP, and in this build, it gets 21 mpg/city and 30 mpg/highway! With such exceptional efficiency specs, you’ll be able to go further, and faster, without worrying about the impact on your budget.
