2017 Ford Explorer vs. 2017 Toyota Highlander

If you're shopping for a new crossover SUV, you have plenty of vehicles to choose from, but few offer the power, control, and safety features you will find in the 2017 Ford Explorer. To demonstrate the advantages of driving an Explorer, we've compared it to the 2017 Toyota Highlander examining the vehicle's power, handling, and safety features. Look it over and, when you're ready to take your Peotone and Bradley, IL commute to the next level, stop by Terry's Ford of Peotone and see how easy it is to finance the SUV of your dreams.

Power and Performance

Ford has built solid, reliable engines for more than a century, and that experience is on full display in the 2017 Explorer with a choice of three potent engine choices including the 3.5L turbocharged V6 that delivers 365 hp and 350 lb.-ft. of peak torque. The Highlander's optional 3.5L V6 engine stops short of those numbers, giving drivers access to just 295 hp and 263 lb.-ft. of torque. The Explorer is better at controlling that extra power as well, thanks to large 13.85-inch front rotors and 13.5-inch rear brake rotors that bring the SUV to a halt from a speed of 70 mph in just 166 feet, according to Car and Driver. The Highlander's smaller 12.9-inch front and 12.2-inch rear brake rotors required 186 feet to perform the same task – a difference of 20 feet!

Safety and Reliability

Ford has a reputation as one of the world's premier automakers, thanks in no small part to the safety equipment included on their vehicles such as the optional center row inflatable safety belts that can help reduce the likelihood of neck and spinal injuries from a rear end collision. The Explorer also offers a limp home system that allows the vehicle to reduce power consumption by shutting down alternating cylinders if the coolant is lost, making it possible to get the vehicle home or to a service station rather than stranding the driver far from safety. The Toyota doesn't offer a “limp home” system.
