Performance

The 2017 Ford Explorer and 2017 Ford Explorer both offer drivers ample power–how much depends on how big you want to go. Both models are offered with 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains, but there are some important differences to consider:

  • Ford Expedition – The Expedition is powered by the 5.3L EcoBoost V6 engine with a 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. It's capable of generating as much as 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, and it can get up to an EPA-estimated 22 mpg highway. When properly equipped, the Expedition can tow up to 6,600 pounds.
  • Ford Explorer – The Explorer offers drivers a choice of three engines, including the 280-hp 2.3L 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine, a 290-hp 3.5L V6 motor capable of up to an EPA-estimated 24 mpg highway fuel efficiency, and a 365-hp 3.5L EcoBoost V6 power plant. Drivers can also take advantage of a 5,000-pound max towing capacity on properly equipped Explorers.

Features

Both SUVs offer drivers access to a long menu of advanced features and plenty of room for the whole family, but the details vary slightly depending on trim. The eight-passenger Ford Expedition provides access to SYNC® 3 with optional navigation, forward and reverse sensing equipment, a 12-speaker Sony audio system, keyless entry, and push-button start.

The seven-passenger Ford Explorer also offers SYNC®ß 3, as well as a front-facing 180-degree camera with forward sensing, a hands-free power liftgate, Active Park Assist, smart-charging USB ports, and Lane Keeping Assist.
