The 2013 Ford Focus vs. The 2013 Kia Rio

Car shoppers from Bradley to Peotone know that there are plenty of options to choose from in the hatchback segment, and at Terry’s Ford, it’s our job to help you make an informed decision. Our best-selling 2013 Ford Focus is often compared to the 2013 Kia Rio, and although we understand that the 5-door hatchback styles are similar, we think that the similarities end there.

Once you see all the facts laid out, it’s clear that the Focus is the higher performing, safer, and more environmentally friendly model. If you aren’t yet sure that a 2013 Ford Focus is the right car for you, take a look at just a few of the ways in which the 2013 Focus trumps its competition and decide for yourself.

  • More Power: The Focus SE model gets a better performance out of its 4-cylinder engine than its equivalent, the Rio LX. The Rio 138 hp and 123 lb-ft. of torque fall flat when compared to the Focus’s stronger, faster 160 hp engine and 146 lb-ft.

  • Superior Safety Ratings: The new Ford Focus has performed well in both NHTSA and IIHS crash tests, and was chosen as an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2013. It’s NHTSA 5-star frontal crash test rating easily bests the Rio’s 4 stars. The Rio is also as-yet untested by the IIHS.

  • Innovative Safety Features: Optional wide-angle blind spot mirrors and available SYNC® technology give the Ford Focus an additional leg up when it comes to safety. The GPS-enabled SYNC® navigation system summons emergency services to your location immediately if an airbag deployment is detected. Neither of these innovative safety-enhancing features are offered at all in the Kia Rio.

  • Fuel Economy and Environmentally Friendly Construction: The Ford Focus SFE bested the Kia Rio ECO Automatic in gas mileage, coming in at an efficient 40 mpg on the highway compared to the Rio’s 36 mpg in the same scenario. The Focus also employs innovative eco-friendly technology such as a cap-less fuel tank, which decreases fuel evaporation and in turn reduces pollution. Even the EPA agrees that the Focus is the more environmentally friendly car. They rated the 2013 Focus models a 6-9 out of 10 (depending on trim level) in overall environmentally friendliness, while the Kia Rio only managed a 5-6 out of 10.

  • Multiple Awards: The 2013 Ford Focus was named among the “Best Cars with the Highest Resale Value” and “12 Best in Class Car Values” in Kiplinger’s 2012 car issue. The Focus has also been named a Car and Driver Top Ten Pick for six out of the last thirteen years. Though awards aren’t everything, the Focus’s many accolades suggest that this is a car that you won’t regret buying.
